Hello and welcome to the show. Today's episode is an answer about episode. So I expect to have a load of interruptions because there's going to be cars around, you know, people gossiping, you know, all those sorts of things because I'm out in a car park. And OK, well, today's episode is it's OK. We're going to talk about how to name your podcast for business growth and that comes out of a coaching session that I had recently with someone who is an aspiring podcast.
OK, well, not an aspiring podcaster, a podcaster and an aspiring voice over artist. The voice artist now voice artist, voice over artist are people who try to make a living by using their voice like some of us. Well, I am trying to make a living by using my voice to get speaking engagements and coaching engagements. But then there's some other people who prefer the acting and so they like to act out radio drama or provide voice over and advertisements and marketing material, you know, stuff like that.
So it's an industry that I didn't know existed in Nigeria until recently. I mean, of course you hear people all over the radio like this musician Sony Neji. As for those of you who are around my age grade, so sunny energy popular Nigerian musician. Well, used to be popular. And I know that used to do lots of radio jingles and voice work and things like that. But I didn't know that there's an actual industry or people who make a living doing that.
So someone tells you you have a nice voice, you actually can't make a living doing that sort of thing. So if Axis Bank is looking for someone to provide the voice for their for their commercials, you know, they hit you up or Peak Milk is recording and advertisement. Maybe there's a family there. They want you to lend the voice of Mumsy, you know, that sort of thing. So there's an industry of people who make a living that way.
And this is a coaching session for someone who wants to break into that industry, who is currently podcasting and was around what to name the show because in my own opinion, the name of the show did not. It didn't position her to find the kind of clients that she hopes to do business with. So these are the sorts of things that we're going to talk about today on the show. And how is it relevant for those of you who are not voice actors and who are in other kinds of businesses.
The way that it's relevant is because it's going to give you ideas about how to go about your content marketing strategy to grow your sales. Because even though you might not be starting a podcast and you might not be a voice over artist, we might discuss some ideas here today. They're going to help you to determine your content marketing strategy and how to position yourself, make yourself discoverable for potential audiences, potential clients.
So those are the stuff that we're going to look over today. And before we get into that, let me just update you guys on the gist about the last podcast. You know where I told you about the terrible interaction on the WhatsApp group where a potential client responded to a message and asked for price and the business owner responded back kind of insinuating that you should have read the link because the prices were there.
You know, that sort of thing. So I just want to give you guys a low down because actually things became even worse after that because I sent the lady a private message saying that, look, I get where you're coming from, but just hop on a phone call with this guy. And, and if you do, you'll be able to figure out if this person is a serious is a serious business inquiry or not. And if he's a workout person, then let the person go.
But if it's a serious customer, then please, by all means rescue the situation and see how you can make some money off of this. Because there's no point in creating all this promotional material that we create and then send out on WhatsApp groups. And then when somebody responds, you know, we start picking a fight with them. The whole point of sending out all these sorts of links is to grow our business. So even if somebody responds on the link and it's not the kind of way that you like, at the very least pretend as if the person just walks into your office or pretend as if the person just walks into your studio, your shop, your whatever, and try and engage the person in the conversation.
Try and figure out is this person interested or just curious or is this person a walk up pass? If they're a walk up pass, then weave it or block the person. If it's if the person is merely curious, then what you do is you engage in relationship nurturing. You keep the person in your in your sights. You send them helpful information once in a while because the the business in this case was office cleaning, home cleaning, residential and office cleaning.
So keep the person in your sights once in a while. You send the person tips on house cleaning, office cleaning products to use, Why office cleaning home cleaning is important. OK, we're currently in the Hamartan season now in Abuja. How office cleaning or home cleaning will cut down allergies and keep your children healthy? You know, all these kind of things, just they send the person stuff Shah regularly because it keeps you top of mind.
It keeps you top of mind with them. They always remember that, OK, this is this lady who does office cleaning and home cleaning that I was chatting with. And then when the time comes and they're ready to move from just being curious to, OK, I want to do this thing now. My children have been going to the hospital too much with asthma. Maybe if I do house cleaning, the thing will stop. And then you're the only person that they would remember because they engaged with you in the WhatsApp group.
You guys started having a conversation, you were doing relationship nurturing. You've been sending them useful material. So they'll just remember you and then they'll pick up the phone and and then they holler. So that's how you deal with it. If the person is just curious and not ready to move ahead, but then if the person is interested, then get the show on the road. OK, how big is your house? How big is the office? What do you want to do, blah,
blah, blah. What day works for you? This is how we do it. We do it per per meter or per square feet or per, you know, I don't know. You discuss the prices and then you get this thing going. It's not about arguing. You know, you should have read the whole thing. The information is already there if you want to know the price because getting into arguments, especially getting into arguments in the public sphere does not help you at all.
You know, we Nigerians who are big on branding, you know, so what's this whole thing of you're trying to build a brand and then you sully your brand because you're arguing with people up and down and it, it doesn't help. It doesn't help at all. So the way that the story ended basically was, you know, the guy insisted in the group that he wanted to know what the price was. And the lady begrudgingly did not give the price.
And she went over how the price is either whether it's a house or it's a home or it's per this or per that. And like I said, all of these quarrel is going on in the WhatsApp group and it it's not very, it doesn't look good. And let's face it, if somebody was thinking of referring you before, but then they're seeing, we don't want to coro coro eyes, how you engage your people. You know, some people might just feel like I can't even recommend this baby again, because if I
recommend this babe, I should feel as if the people I sent to her are talking one kind, you know, that's how she'll just change it for them. You know, she'll just start provoking on them and stuff like that. So it's not good. It's not good at all. In my own opinion, it didn't end well. So yes, the lady has made her point that yes, if you're interested, you should have checked the link. All the information that you need was there.
But I'm much more interested in making money and I'm not really interested in being right. So even when the customer is wrong. So even when the customer is wrong and I'm right, to be honest, for me, I'm just trying to say I can make a sale out of this whole thing. If I make a sale and I put money in my pocket, I put fuel in my car, I pay my children's school fees, you know, for me, that's the main thing. So I don't think we business owners should be too hung up about making a point when these sorts of things happen.
So let me just repeat it again just in case you're somebody who is involved in a WhatsApp group, you've been putting links out there to promote your business. If somebody does that slide thing, reply and ask a bunch of questions. The right thing to do is not to engage with the person there. Just thumbs up the message or heart the message and say thank you very much for your interest in XYZ. I will slide into your DM shortly so we can take the conversation from there.
Slide into that person's DM and then start having a profitable business discussion. If it looks like the person is a serious person is no worker pass then hop on the phone. I have a phone call. Wrap this thing up sharp sharp and then make your money if there's money to be made in that situation. But any either way, let's not quarrel with potential customers on WhatsApp, People are watching. Let's not quarrel with potential customers on Instagram or on LinkedIn.
People are watching. And if you have a shop and somebody comes to your shop, please do not quarrel with people in your shop because other customers are there and they are watching. So let's be mindful of these sorts of things. OK, so that's enough about the WhatsApp thing. I'm not going to update you guys again, regardless of how the thing turns out. Then before we go into how to name your podcast for business growth, let me show.
When I'm listening on Spotify, I'm currently listening to Rage Against the Machine. And yes, like the name sounds Rage Against the Machine, it's a fusion of rock and hip hop, nice grooves, some funk elements in it, but it's music that is politically charged and very socially conscious. So it's not for everyone. So I mean, like me, I'm feeling myself and you know, I'm enjoying the thing, but it's the kind of thing that if I had blasting on the speakers, wife will be like early in the morning.
Why are you listening to this kind of thing now? Why are you making yourself angry, you know, for no reason. So if your spouse is sensitive to these sorts of things, it's not the kind of thing you want to be blasting in the house or in the car. If your mum sees a born again Christian, you definitely do not want to be playing this sort of thing in the house because your mum should just be binding and casting like any in the morning while you're playing this kind of angry music.
You know those sorts of things. But if you're looking for ground breaking work, because the group Rage Against the Machine, they came out to critical acclaim, is really creative stuff, then try it out. Yeah, rock, hip hop, fusion, you know, correct music. But just remember, the music is very angry. It's politically charged, it's socially conscious. It's about all kinds of things, you know, environmentalism, racism, poverty.
So it's, it's very angry music. So it's not for everyone. I don't think you should play it when your children are around. For those of you who have kids, don't play when the kids are there. This is just for your own listening pleasure only. So Rage Against the Machine, that's what I'm listening to on Spotify. Remember, it is not for everyone. So now let's head straight to the podcast episode for today. And that is how to name your podcast for business growth.
Now, I've been talking a lot about podcasting, so I'll try not to go over the whole thing about time frames, but just remember that podcasting or content marketing, long form content marketing plays are long term strategies. They do not work in the short term. So do not think that you will start your podcast in December of 2024 and then in February of 2025 you will hammer you become a millionaire. That is not going to happen.
Adjust your time frame if you want to know some more about that, then just go to YouTube after you're done listening to this episode. All the 970 something episodes that we've done so far are available on YouTube. So just type in Tavishima, type in podcasting or Tavishima podcast or Tavishima content marketing or Tavishima content and every single episode that I've made about podcasting and about content marketing is going to come up.
Listen to it with a pen and paper. Write down two or three things that you can do immediately to move your business forward. Today is a Monday morning, so if you do that and you're listening to my material, you best be writing down stuff that you can do tomorrow, Tuesday morning, to move the business forward. There's no point in listening to all these things. You're not going to start practising one or two things. Oh, sorry, hold on.
One more thing. OK, sorry about that. I had to check some settings on my phone. I think an interruption was coming in because for those of you who have been listening for a while, you know, it's no secret that I record from my phone. So sorry about that interruption. Where was I? So I just talked about how we need realistic time frames when it comes to podcasting or long form content marketing. People have different motives when they are going into podcasting.
There's some people who podcast just for personal growth. So some people will tell you that look, Tavishma, you're talking too much and podcasting because it makes me feel good. I'm being my authentic self. I don't want to make money. All right, no problem. If that's your deal, then no problem. Continue, continue to podcast, but just know that is kind of self-serving because if you're doing your podcast and it's all about you, my authentic self,
I'm putting out this into the universe and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. It's very, very self-serving. And truth of the matter is, let's face it, I mean, who, who are you in the grand scheme of things? It's not like you're Oprah Winfrey or Michael Jackson, rest in peace or bollaty nubu that somebody just wants to listen to your evolution of personal growth just for the sake of listening. So if you're someone who has achieved some sort of notoriety,
public fame or something, then yes, people will be interested in listening to you and watching your character evolution and your growth. But if you are a relative nobody in the scheme of things, By the way, when I say relative nobody, I'm not saying you're not worth anything. I'm not saying Tinibu and Oprah Winfrey are worth more than we are. I'm not saying that. I'm not saying relatively speaking in the scheme of things, personal power, personal status, you know, things like that.
There's a reason why some people would listen to a podcast if Tinibu started a podcast today, but they're not going to listen to your own podcast if it is about your own personal growth because you'll be like, well, and Tinibu is president and he came from, OK, well, let me not say anything. He came from this to this and he's now president. You know, how did he make it? Don't listen to the podcast. Well, for you, relatively speaking, right now, you're nobody ish.
You're still important because all human beings have worth in the eyes of God. So yes, you are important, but there's very little reason why people are going to listen to yourself serving podcast. So if your podcast is about personal growth, then continue keeping your authentic self. However, I think that business growth is the best motive for podcasting because at least if you're podcasting for business growth, there's going to be an exchange of value.
People are going to be listening to you. People are going to be getting stuff out of it and you're going to make some money out of it. And the only way you can make money out of it is if you give value. So podcasting for business growth, in my own opinion, is the best motive because there is an exchange of value. You get something and you give people something. But if you're podcasting because you're being your authentic self, then it's self-serving.
You're just trying to grow out in the universe and for some reason you want to show off that you're growing. So yeah, let me move on from that. So those are different motives for podcasting. Now, naming the podcast is something that I've had to talk to people about and that was what this coaching session was about between me and this voice over artist who is trying to use podcasting to promote her business. Now, naming is important because it affects discoverability.
If you do not name your podcast well, people will not discover your show. That is what discoverability means. If people do not discover your show, there will be no audience and there will be no engagement. That is what discoverability is all about. If there is no audience and if there is no engagement, there will be no potential clients. This is what discoverability is all about. So if you're in a coaching session with me and we're talking about these things, this is the reason why I'm going to be smacking you guys over the head about this whole naming thing of naming your show because people want to be cute about the podcast name and they want to be sexy.
You know, chilling with Tavishima right now, nobody knows who Tavishima is. So naming your show Chilling with Tavishima does not help anybody discover the show or chilling with Agnes. Now, in this case, the name of her show was just her initials and the initials were OK, let me not use the say what her initials are, but her initials in the Nigerian context can mean anything from the person who is the auger of the business to that's even if you want to put it in the business context because a lot of people will just see it and not not even know like what do these initials means?
Because really it was just initials. That was the title of our show. It's like me having a show and then naming my show TGA. So yeah, TGA, you know, that's those are my initials, Tavishima George Aidi. So it sounds nice, right? Sounds posh, sounds touché. But for the rest of the world, TGA can mean absolutely anything and it can mean absolutely nothing. So naming your show by your initials, Yeah, even if it's a placeholder, it means nothing.
So in the coaching session that I had with this voice over actor and podcaster, I asked the person a couple of questions. I asked the question what the podcast was about. She's still trying to figure that out. The number of episodes that she has, she currently has about four. Who is the audience? Who are the ICP? She's hoping to reach out to business people, especially people in the corporate space. What is the aim of the show?
Hopefully it is to get voice over work in the future so you can see that she's podcasting. She's not quite sure. She's still planning to figure this thing out. She's on a journey, but she's hoping that business people who listen to this thing will say how correct this babe has a nice voice. Let me go and book her to do voice acting for my gig, for my business or for my this or for my that, or maybe to be MC for my show.
So currently what she's doing on the podcast is she's reading out interesting material, trying out different accents and you know, things like that. So there's some of you who say, babe, you need to tighten up your shop, it's all over the place, blah, blah, blah. Maybe you have a point. But in my own opinion, being all over the place, that's not a problem so long as you correctly signal to everybody where you're at. So in this place, in this kind of context, the content marketing strategy that I give people in this situation is like, look, you're still trying to figure a whole bunch of stuff out.
So do not try to position yourself as the expert. Don't you position yourself as a voice over expert and somebody captures your show and it's like this baby's just faffing all over the place. You will lose credibility instantly. So the strategy here is to use a journaling strategy. Journaling just means this is me, this is what I'm up to, this is what I'm trying to achieve. These are the steps that I'm doing to do that.
That is a very honest positioning. Anybody who discovers you be like, yeah, OK, she did try. Sure. She's getting there. And people will be along with you on the journey. And eventually you'll reach a stage where people like, OK, this baby has made it. She definitely has skills. And I do now call you, I said, OK, I've been following your podcast for a while. I have this project. It's an advertisement. I want you to do voice over or I
have this show. I want you to do MC, you know, and that's how it works. So in this case, don't try to be for me like you're any expert somebody. It's a journaling strategy and then people will follow you for the ride. You're being honest. So there's no Yawa. So that's why I didn't tell her to tighten anything up. Now, using this information that we had, I came up with a bunch of suggestions for her show, the names for our show.
So instead of using her initials, in my own case, TGA, let's just pretend that she has initials like me, TGA, instead of just calling the show the TGA show, which can mean absolutely anything and absolutely nothing. And it won't help people discover your show because like I said, discoverability is their main thing when we're talking about podcasting here. If there is no discoverability, if people do not find you, there will be no engagement, there will be no audience and you will have no potential clients.
It's that simple. You have to name your show something that people are searching. If you want to talk to 50 year old women who live in the Midwestern part of Nigeria, then your podcast title should have something in the title that 50 year old women who live in Midwestern Nigeria are searching for as how it works. So in this case, I came up with a number of suggestions. One suggestion was the accidental voice actor. Another suggestion was the voice over Voyage.
Another suggestion was the voice over hustle. Now, the benefits of what I suggested were this. These titles, The Accidental Voice Actor, The Voiceover Voyage, and The Voiceover Hustle clearly shows that she is still in flux. It clearly shows that she is still trying to figure out one or two things. If you sign up to a show that is called The Accidental Voice Actor, you will not be disappointed that this babe is still trying to figure out one or two things because the name of the show clearly signals that this person is in flux and that this person is trying to discover one or two things.
Then it also has the key terms in it voice actor, so that people who are interested in voice acting will find your show or people who are looking for a voiceover actor will find your show. So I hope you guys see how it works. Now, the reason why I'm sharing this coaching episode that I had with this particular individual is because I've been writing a lot about how people need to name their podcast, right? Or need to think better about their content marketing strategy.
And I've not been giving you guys physical examples that you guys can look at and say that, oh, OK, I'll see what Tavishma means. I see how it applies. So this is one of those things. So instead of just naming her show TGA, which means nothing or which could mean anything, any of these titles, the accidental voice actor, the voice over Voyage or the voice over Hustle is going to allow her to continue podcasting and to continue trying to figure things out.
And people will be along for the journey because they know that, OK, this podcast is about voice acting and this baby is still trying to figure a couple of things out. And as your audience is growing with you, they will grow until the day when you achieve expert status. And when that time comes, they'll pick up the phone and they'll buzz you and they'll say, oh, be how far been listening to the show? Been listening for the last three years.
Absolutely love your show. Now I'm ready to do so, so, so and so. And it has to be you. I'm such a fan. How do I engage you? How much do you cost? Oh, come and do MC for me. So that's how it works. And the reason why I made this podcast episode, like I said, is this is a physical example here, or rather a concrete example where, OK, it's not physical, we can't touch it. So this is a concrete example about how certain things that we do regarding naming and strategy and things like that in our content marketing strategy, how it can grow our sales, because that's the whole point of every single thing that we talk about over here on the podcast.
We are trying to grow our sales and grow our businesses. So if you're currently trying to figure out a bunch of stuff in your business, you want to adopt A content marketing approach and you are willing to invest the time that is required because I told you there is no content marketing thing that you would do in January and then you will blow in February. If you're looking to blow in February and March and you're starting something in January,
you had better be looking at advertising or you had better be looking at direct response copywriting. That is where you can reasonably hope that you put out something in January and then sales will start coming in February. Do not do content marketing if you need money now, now, now, now, now. So if you have you want to grow the business and you're considering a content marketing approach and you want to use content marketing to grow sales in the medium to long term, then reach out.
Let's have a conversation. I'd be more than happy to help you out and steer the ship in the right direction. My contact details are this. The phone number is 08064662140. The country code is +234.
