Hello and welcome. Yesterday I was on my radio show and I got a call from Stanley and we had an interesting conversation regarding the USP of your business. Now your USP is the unique selling proposition or the UVP, your unique value proposition. You know, it's called different things in different places depending on where you are. So American literature likes to call it the UVP unique, unique value proposition. Then Nigerian speakers prefer to say USP unique selling proposition.
In fact, the first time I heard it, somebody said unique selling point. OK, yeah, so let's go with unique selling point. So Stanley and I were in a conversation about the unique selling point. And for those of you who are unaware of the concept, let me just slow it down a little bit. Now, the unique selling points or the unique selling proposition actually is one of the keys that we can use to sell well. And the reason why that is the case is because lots of times when we're having conversations with potential customers, with potential clients, we don't know what makes us different.
We don't know what makes us tick. We don't know why people think we're different, why people do business with us. So we're not able to say in a very emotionally compelling way that this is the reason why you should do business with me. So This is why the USB unique selling points as we say in Niger is very, very important. So if I know for a fact that people like me, because I am 123 and 456, I can say it confidently with the full chest and say do business with me.
Because in all of Abuja or in all of Lagos or in all of Aqua or in all of Anambra, in all of whatever, I am the only person who 123456. And again, I can say with my full chest, I don't have to stammer, I don't have to start up. I don't have to be afraid because I know it for a fact that this is the reason why I'm different. So for lots of us who are founders, salespeople, business owners, you know you're a career salesperson.
You need you, you, it up to yourself to know for a fact what your unique selling point is. Why do people do business with you? Why are you different? Now, the reason why this is important is because when you're able to figure it out, you can use it confidently in your sales and marketing collateral. You can put it in your advertisements online or offline or billboards. You can put it on Flyers, what else? You can put it on social media,
you can use it in conversations. So it's really, really important that we try and figure this out. Now, the conversation that some of you will have, especially those of you discovering the show for the first time, the question is going to be, how do you know what your USP is? Lots of people try and solve the problem by doing guesswork. The problem with guesswork is, you know, you guess, you're just guessing. Sometimes you're right and sometimes you're wrong and you're terribly, terribly wrong.
Sorry about that. So for those of you who've been listening to the podcast from the beginning, you will know how early on when I was in the event space, I used to guess that the reason why people were doing business with me was because they were tired of being photoshopped. Now, by putting some practices in place after talking to some customers, I discovered that it was more about my professional attitude and how I did business that was the reason why people were doing business with me.
So for a very long time, I was doing guess work thinking that my unique selling point was my lack of Photoshop. And that was what I kept putting out in advertisements, in Flyers, in social media and conversations. But if that is not the main reason why people were doing business with me, you can see that I was just wasting my time. So from talking to people and figuring out my unique selling proposition, I was able to refocus the conversation.
And so right now, when I'm doing business deals with other people, you know, I leave all that artistic stuff out because for some people, the artistic stuff is precisely the reason why they're coming to you. Oh, you're the best photographer. You're the best Baker, you're the best architecture, whatever, whatever, whatever. But unfortunately, I've learned my lesson. That is not why people come to me. So my team and I just finished doing a deal.
And yes, some of you will be confused, but don't be confused. I'm a former lawyer turned business consultant, but I have a previous media background so I don't advertise all that media stuff. But if anybody calls me I say, oh boy, how far are you free? We're going to so local. So local governments want to shoot 1 producer documentary. If the number they call makes sense, you know, I'll mobilize my boys and we'll get cracking because like I said, now money I
define. That's the reason why I'm on this podcast. So don't be confused if, you know, I mentioned two or three other things in this podcast episode or in any other podcast episode. So for the media work now I don't tell anybody come and do business with me because my stuff is is a cinematic quality or, you know, lack of Photoshop or you know, this and this and this and all the artistic stuff that I would like to say. I just go straight into need analysis, try and figure out what it is that is going on.
And I play up the more professional aspects of doing business with me because I know that for me, that is what is going to get me the sale. So for you, assuming you're a media person as well, if you, you know, are the artistic type, it's possible that that's the reason why people chase you. That's why it's called a unique selling proposition or unique selling point. Your own is different from my own, even though we are selling the exact same thing.
So when you know your own and you know what works for you, guy or babe, play it up. So now I know what mine is and I play it up. I don't bother talking about cameras anymore or quality or depth of field or things being candid. You know, I don't talk about all of that. Mine is just OK, I'm here. What's the whole point? What are we trying to achieve with this film or. OK, Like this, Like this, OK, Like that. Like that. OK, If I understand the vision,
this is what you want to do. Why do we. Why do you want this documentary? Oh, OK. It's part of your reporting obligations. You need to show it to the board. You need to do this. You need to do that. You know, I just, I I leave all the artistic stuff out. I keep it professional. I show that we can meet timelines, show that we can meet deadlines. Come up with a tight production schedule, Come up with a tight, what's this thing called?
Now you know when you come up with an idea for what the, the documentary is supposed to be about. Sorry, forgive me, I can't remember what The thing is called. But anyway, it's essentially the document that I, I come up with or some people in this field come up with just to be sure that you know, we are on the same point that you understand the brief, you understand the assignment, you come up with a creative brief. OK, Forgive me 7 minutes.
OK, let's see. Anyway, so you get the point. The reason why somebody does business with me is different from the reason why somebody will do business with you, even though we are selling the exact same thing. So we need to find out what the USP is, our unique selling proposition, our unique selling point or as our American brothers and sisters would like to say, our unique value proposition. So how do you know some people are doing guesswork in the beginning?
Yeah, guess because you don't know any better. You've only done one or two clients, no problem. But by the time you have a few reps under your belts, you service like 5678910 people. What you need to do is to start asking people. So in the beginning, now guess what? Because you're not sure. Later on, after you have some experience and you have some clients under your belt, you start asking questions. This is really, really important.
It is I'm asking people questions that you will get the real cocoa, you will get the real meat. You understand exactly what it is that was bothering people when they reached out to you and the reason why they called you up. Now, this is how you do it very simply, and this is part of the stuff that Stanley and I were talking about on the air. So first of all, you call your customers. This is not the kind of conversation that you have by WhatsApp or by texting or whatever.
So if you have the relationship with your customer that you can just, you know, you just walk out, enter the guy's office or enter the guy's house or whatever, then you know, cool, do that. But either way, this is going to be a spoken conversation. Even if you end up switching to WhatsApp, no problem, but start the conversation by speaking first. So you call them up and you tell them thank you very much. I appreciate you for your business.
You've been one of our most important customers from last year up until now. I truly, truly appreciate the business that we've done. So thank you very much for all the business that you brought our way. The person will talk back, then you slide into, I hope you're happy. You know, there's no problem with this last project that we worked on. In fact, this particular project, you know, I had some concerns that maybe one thing like this, one thing like that.
I hope say everything, they OK, everything is cool, everything is settled. They hear what it is that they have to say. Then you now continue. You now say OK boss or babe or Sir or Dogu or Madame or Chief or Sugar Bar or Vesen or whatever it is You now tell them that's here because I value your own opinion and you're such an important customer to me. I want to ask you a few questions just so I can improve my hustle so I can get better.
Also so that on future projects I can do better for you. Hope you don't mind. I can ask you a few questions. Lots of people will say yes. By the way, at this stage, this is the reason why I say you have the conversation of are you happy? I hope there's no problem because if this guy is angry and there's problem, if this woman is angry and there's problem, this whole part of can I ask you questions, you know, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah, the answer will be no.
And in their mind they'll be thinking, Can you imagine the effrontery? This idiot, after all the money I gave him and all the rubbish, he had the gall to come and ask me questions that he wants to improve himself, wants to improve his ministry after wasting my money. So that's the reason why this second part of first, the first part of thank you, I appreciate your business and then moving into I hope you're happy. I hope there's no problem.
I hope we didn't spoil anything. I hope we didn't scatter anything. Hope everything is good. The thing that I designed for you share The thing is working. You need to go into all that. That is all we give you the permission. That's what we give you the right to now say look, Madam, because I appreciate your opinion. I appreciate your business, Madam. You're a person that I respect. I just want to ask you a few questions just so I can approve my also also so that if anything, another business I'll be able to serve you well.
Then from there you will now start asking questions. What do you like about doing business with us? What can we do better? What are the things you can approve upon, blah, blah, blah. All those kind of questions will be preamble. You ask that one first just to soft, you know, just to soften the ground, make everything soft. Soft. OK, So what do you like working? Honey, you get the point. What is it that you like working about us?
What could we have done better? This, this Eventually we get to the point where you say, OK, so mommy, what is it that you like about doing business with me? You don't personalize them. That is where if you've done a good job, you build rapport. The conversation has been flowing smoothly. That is where people will start dropping germs and one start telling you. One bride told me she said, Tavishima, you are the only vendor I didn't have to worry about on my wedding day.
When she told me nothing, nothing filled my chest with pride. And it's something that I could tell other people later on because one person told me her exact words. Other people told me the same thing. So it's something I could say confidently when I was selling that. Look, you know what, for this, your wedding, you're going to be talking to about 30, 40 vendors. I can assure you I am the only one that you will not have any issues to deal with.
I am the only one who is going to be proactive. You will have to chase everybody else for me. You won't have to chase me. The reason why I can say that with full confidence was because other brides told me the same thing. You see what I mean? Full confidence. I'm standing on the authority of other people who have said it, so therefore I can see it with my full chest. I won't stammer, I won't stutter, I won't shake, I won't blink.
As I'm saying it, I'm standing firm and I'm looking at them straight in the eye. Then they'll feel that one more. This guy is, I don't know what it is, but there's something to this guy. So what do you like about doing business with me eventually, How can I serve you better, blah, blah, blah. You know, stuff like that. Thank them very much for their time. I can assure you this all right, the first conversation you have will be awkward, definitely will be awkward as hell because this is the first time you're doing it and the first time you do anything is hella awkward.
In fact, the first time I tried it, one of my long time clients because she was the first wedding that I shot in Abuja and was doing a high profile wedding on that. So when I asked her, you don't believe her as she said I don't know, I just like you. And for me, I was confused because I didn't know what I was going to do with that. Am I going to say I am the wedding photographer that you will end up liking? Like I had no idea what I was going to do with that.
But I persevered and I stuck through the process and then I started hearing other things from other people and then I confirmed why people were doing business with me. So the first time, well, for some of us we'll be hella awkward, but don't, don't let that stop you from proceeding. Just continue. Don't worry. Here's another thing I can promise you, by the time this thing works like magic, by the time you've spoken to 78910
people, you will start seeing some themes reoccurring for good and for bad. So the ones that are good, correct, you're learning your USB. But please, this is where I asked for some humility, please humility because you know, those of us who start off in business and who sell and you know, we can't be a proud bunch because it's not easy to talk to strangers and stuff like that. So some of us, you know, like we are big heads, we're proud.
This is the time for humility. If by the time 2-3 four people say this is a bad thing, this is a bad thing, this is a bad thing or more, stop making excuses. People are being honest with you, are giving you candid feedback as they are saying the bad one be writing the bad one down. If it's not paying you too much, go and talk to your wife about it. But if your wife says, hey, you know, my dad actually correct, This is not the time to start shouting at your wife or the other way around.
If you're a woman to start shouting at your husband and said, oh, you know, encouraging me with my career, with my business and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. By the time two or three people have said this is something we don't like about you, this is something we don't like about you, just note it down. Take dressing, you know, pray about it, whatever. It's something you need to work on. But I can assure you, by the time you talk to 810 people, you will start hearing some common themes, some common ideas.
In some cases, you'll hear some common words like me, I heard professional with my business consulting and with the podcast, for instance, one word that has keep coming up over and over again. I've heard 2 words. Number one is practical. That is one word that people say specifically practical because other business podcasts, people talk about things in the air. In the air they're trying to be motivational and so they're talking academic, academic.
But for me, practical. I didn't come up with that on my own. It is you guys who told me other things that kept coming up, examples that are, you know, people like the examples that I use. So is it any surprise that in future podcast episodes, I always try to give practical examples because that is what people told me that they like. Then people also say casual, conversational, easy to work with. So is it any surprise that for those of you who reach out to me, I try to be easy, casual,
conversational to make the working relationship smooth because it is what people have told me that they like. So my unique point is coming up, not because I am manifesting what it is I intend to be. It is you people who interact with me that are telling me we like this. We don't like that. That's how it should be. So for those of you who talk to me, I say, oh boy, you're very confident. No, not be confident. You who have already told me so because you've told me one or two things.
I can repeat it like I'm not guessing. It is other people that have said it. Remember when I was young? OK, well, I'm still young. When I was younger and somebody said something like, I can't remember what the person said. The person said something, something, something, something fine boy, you know, And then I smiled and then another person said if you're fine, you're fine. So it's like that. If you're a fine boy, you're a fine boy.
They will tell you that you're a fine boy. If you're trying to form fine boy by yourself, you know you, you might be, you know, you might be shaking. But if from the time you were born, everybody's always testifying, fine boys see dimples as with a smile, see skin, see, you know, and that's why you know boys like that, you always end up being full of yourself. So it's people that are telling you you're not the one who is telling yourself you're not trying to manifest anything.
They're just telling you what is there. So it's the very same thing. You need selling proposition, unique selling point, unique value proposition. Figure it out. To figure it out, you have to talk to people. Don't guess. Now, the turning point in the conversation between Stanley and I was this. Stanley called in. I said, oh boy, I heard all these things that you're saying about UVP, but I was just wondering, review on call.
Does that one qualify? And I had to tell him that Mayor Stanley, thanks for calling because escaped my mind. Reviews is also an important part of the conversation. In the reviews, people are telling you what's up, They're telling you what they like, they're telling you what they don't like. So when we look at reviews and we're trying to skim through it, we're trying to dig up stuff. Pay attention the things that are people, people are saying this is good, this is good, this is good, correct.
Note I'm down. Look as in penny down. Write it down. Discourse your business partners with your spouse, you know, with your parents or you know, your brother, your sister, you know, whereby is an important person to you in business. Be discussing all these feedback. You'll be getting ideas about how you can incorporate all these things into your sales and marketing and collateral, your processes, your frameworks. Also remember, humility are big.
If you notice that on reviews people are saying one or two things that you don't like, it's the same thing. Just try and be humble. Note it down. You know, of course you'll be angry for a while. Talk to somebody, you know, who you love, you know, let your mind calm down small. And then by the time the anger is gone, you know, just pray about it. And then, OK, let me try. And what can I do to fix this? So people are saying, oh, boy,
you're the best architect. Well, ha, you root like you root gone. OK, there's something you need to work on. You spoken to 10 people. Eight of them said you're the absolute best, then six of them were brave enough to say you know what, you're the absolute best. But because he asked me for honesty, let me just be real with you. If six of them say you're rude, then you know that OK, in your marketing material, you can put that you are the best architects in Abuja.
Then in yourself, you know that you need to work on yourself because you're a rude boy or you're a rude girl. So pay attention to the reviews, so long as the reviews are organic, please. When we say organic, we just mean how will I put it now? Like homegrown, like you didn't beg for it Because there's some people that this is how they get reviews. They'll reach out to someone and say, hope you enjoy doing business with me.
Can you leave me a review? And the person will say, I don't know what to say. Then the person will say, oh, OK, don't worry, I will write something for you. Just paste it on Google as the review. Would that be OK? So yes, in that case, that is not an authentic review. You're the one who told the person what to say. In fact, in my own opinion, if you ask somebody for a review and the person says, I don't know what to say, I'll just leave stars for you.
Tell the person, thank you. If somebody goes and leaves five stars on Google, but they didn't write anything, you know, it's, it's OK. It's not worthless. So for organic comments where people write by their own selves, this business was fantastic, it was awesome, this was good, this was good. I wish they had done this. I wish they had done that. Or somebody writes, oh, this thing was absolutely terrible, blah, blah, blah.
Just pay attention. You're getting the seeds of your unique selling points there, your unique selling proposition. So the question now became with Mr. Stanley, OK, I'm getting lots of reviews, plenty of reviews. By the way, if you are getting that problem. My brother, my sister, praise the Lord on your behalf. Thank God because for the rest of us, the problem is we're trying to get review, review. Know the issue. Like people love the podcast,
for instance, and when they reach out to me, they tell me, but review this thing online now you know, people are not reviewing. So like on Spotify for instance, where I have 4500 and something subscribers, I only have about 109 reviews and then the four points, four 4.9 rating or something like that. So clearly my problem is I don't have enough reviews. So if you're like Stanley and the problem is review, just they come, just they come, just they come, man, that's a good problem to have.
The rest of us would die to have that kind of problem. So he says with all the reviews I'm getting, how do I distill it? I said, OK, no problem. So so Stanley, that's all we're going to do. You want to use AI tools to distill your unique value proposition. So you say, Tavishma, you've come again. AI tools. You're being lazy. This is not being lazy, it's working. Smart AI tools are very good. They are very efficient computational tools.
They can use you. They can save you a lot of time sorting through data and things like that. So I beg right? Just use this thing. The way to look at it is this. Stanley called me to ask me how far you wanted my idea. I'm a living being. What's the difference if he turns to something else that happens not to be alive and then to ask the thing how far? It's the same either way. Stanley's asking for help. So let's not be too particular about whether we're asking a living thing or we're asking a non living thing.
So this what I did for Stanley. So live on the air. I have my keyboard with me. So I just came up with a prompt sharply. Then after that, I told him to send me a WhatsApp message. By the way, for those of you who would love to connect with me, the number to call is 08064662140. You can send me a WhatsApp message, you can send me a text message. So that's the number to get in touch. So you don't have a conversation just like how Stanley and I did.
So created a prompt and I want to share that prompt with you today. Please remember that this prompt is particular to Mr. Stanley, so you have to tweak it to your own circumstances, but it follows the general outline, the general structure that I recommend to people when we talk about coming up with with prompts. So first of all, this AI tool knows absolutely nothing about you. So the first thing you need to do is to give the thing a bit of a context.
You know, who are you, what's the challenge, blah, blah, blah. You know, before you ask the question. Because if you don't give any context and you just ask the question is when you give you advice that can apply in Australia, in Afghanistan, in Nigeria, in Uzbekistan or in Washington DC. But the problem is you are a Nigerian business person. You don't live in Washington DC or Uzbekistan or Afghanistan or Australia. So the first part of the prompt was I am a Nigerian businessman living in Abuja, FCT who is in the business of house finishing,
plaster of Paris and the general beautification of homes for my clients. So when you give an AI tool this kind of background, this is me, this is where I live, this is my business setup, you see that the AI tool now incomingable with solutions, suggestions, whatever. We limit it to things that are particular to people in this kind of setup. So that's the reason why the opening paragraph always has to be something like this.
You know, who am I, what's the context, what's the setup, what's going down. So I'm a Nigerian businessman living in Abuja, FCT who is in the business of house finishing, plaster of Paris and general beautification of homes for my clients. I heard on the radio station about the concept of the USP which the host explained as the main reason why people do business with me. I have received plenty of good messages from my customers and clients from 2025 up till date in 2026.
Here are some of the messages below. Then I told Stanley this is where you do copy and paste. So all those messages that people have been sending you since 2025, I'm sorry. Yes, I know that this one is going to be hard work, but trust me, it will be worth it. All those reviews, copy, paste, copy, paste, copy, paste, copy, paste. Don't worry, AI does not get tired. That's the beauty of this thing. Even if you create a 4000 word prompt, the thing will not be tired.
The thing will do work. You see the benefit of using these tools if you ask me. And you now come and show me all these reviews that people have been giving you. You want me to use my head and distill it? Of course I will charge you money. You're meant to sit down there for hours and hours and hours on end looking at 1 review after another after another after another after another. Because I'm trying to distill your USB.
Of course I will charge you money like I said, now money. Are they fine? That's the reason why I'm on this microphone. But the AI tool for now is free. So I told Stanley, copy and paste all those messages people have been send you copy, paste, copy, paste, copy paste, copy paste. Then you now put the final paragraph using these messages from my clients above. Help me figure out my USB. You know he'd said. Bap. Ladies and gentlemen, I can assure you, you will not reach 45 seconds.
You'll get a response. Some of those things will make good sense. Some of those things you won't understand. Some of the responses you know might be useless. I am not bothered about because people say, oh, AI 2 hallucinates it makes errors. Look, I don't care about the errors. Are there one or two things there that makes sense that we can deal with? That's that's all I care about. OK, so the thing they hallucinate, the thing they make mistake, the thing they do this,
this one, no, this one, no apply. This one, no apply, no problem. The one that makes sense and the one that I apply those two or three ideas. Oh, yeah. Remove it, distill it, then start to use those things in your messaging when you do online advertisement. All those things that people said as much as possible. The exact wording that is what you should be using in the advertisements, in your Flyers, on your social media, in your conversations.
So when I stood before couples and I said I am the only wedding vendor you will never have to worry about is because I was quoting somebody else, She said, Tavishima, you were the only wedding vendor I did not have to worry about. So if you understand Lee's position and people are just gushing over what you do on Google and they give you review on Telegrams, they're sending you review to your inbox on Instagram, people are just dropping reviews for you back,
you know, and you like the love, but you don't know, like, OK, all these hundreds of comments now, how will I distill it into something I can use for my next advertising campaign? This is your solution now? I use Google Gemini just because it's part of the Google suite. I have to change my phone soon. And when I do, all I have to do is just take this new phone, sign in and voila, everything will be there. You'd remember my history, all my settings, all my every,
every. That's the reason why I use Google products, not because it's the best. Oh, by the way, I keep saying this for those of you who are listening to this podcast and you love this and you want to support your boy, if you work in Google, tell your guy that, look, there's this Nigerian podcast that we supposed support this guy. Let's give him a few dollars, you know, just to bless his life or maybe give him some dollars just so that he can, you know,
be an official, what's it called? Brand ambassador for this or this or that or that, you know, try me. A trial will convince you. He will not confuse you. So if you work at Google, by the way, or any other company that have been mentioning your products, reach out to me. Sponsor your boy. All right, so where was I? But I'm not saying you have to use Gemini because there's some people who are generally confused. They don't know AI.
They don't they don't want to install anything. No problem. So what I've been doing now, especially on the radio show, is by the time somebody says yeah, what is? Yeah, I tell them look, don't worry, don't research anything, don't download anything. You know what? You're calling me from WhatsApp? Yeah, good. OK, So just exit this call, shrink this call screen, then go back to your inbox. When you look at the inbox, look on the right hand side, put your eye down.
When you look down, you'll see 2 icons. 1 looks like a messaging icon with a plus. Don't touch that one. That one is for broadcast message. The other one has like a circle going in different colors like from pink to purple to blue to turquoise to something that one click on it. That is your AI tool living directly in your WhatsApp inbox. This has been available for such a while, I'm surprised that so many people don't know.
And every single time I say it, every single time I say it, somebody's just discovering it for the first time. So in my last radio show, you know, after that one lady called Onyeka Onyekachi, really interesting name by the way. I mean, did she catch that her name is Onyeka? Then her son name is Onyekachi. I mean, that was really dope. So she called and she said this thing exists. I said, Madam, this has been here for long.
I don't know when they started. All I just know is my sister-in-law told me. And that's why we shouldn't be ashamed because I didn't know this thing was there because my sister-in-law that told me, first of all, somebody I was working with said there was AI in Snapchat. I said AI in Snapchat. The person showed me. I said, wow. And I was not telling my sister-in-law. My sister-in-law was like, you know, you think it's even in WhatsApp.
I say WhatsApp where she says, then I say, where is it? She say bring your phone. This is it. I say I was shocked. So there's no shame. And by the way, if you know these things, I beg other people who are learning business, you know around you be sharing this knowledge with people because surprisingly lots of people don't know.
